The preliminary purpose of the department was to train technical teachers in civil engineering for high schools of provinces such as East Azerbaijan, West Azerbaijan, and Kurdistan so that they could educate necessary knowledgeable man-power for society. Since 1998, it has almost succeeded in attaining its goals by admitting BS students for day and night classes in civil engineering, and parallel to qualitative development of higher education, it could take a major step toward the goal by accepting students for MS level in structure branch of civil engineering in 2005. During the recent decade, it managed to achieve a major portion of its goals by training several experts(both teachers and engineers), employing proficient academics graduated from foreign outstanding universities, and admitting scholarship students from local universities. This faculty will continue its activities mainly in pure civil engineering according to the recent policies.
Its future plans:
On qualitative development grounds, it has taken some steps to open International Aras Branch of the department in future parallel to Tabriz University and it is hoped that it can admit students for Ph.D level in 2013. The building of the new technical faculty started in the summer of 2012 and will be utilized in 2013; therefore, the construction of structures and road pavement labs and their use in doing research is the forthcoming end of the department. Furthermore, it has planned to open new branches of civil engineering such as irrigation, soil, seismology.
Slides, projects, laptops, and video projectors are easily available for both students and teachers; moreover, the students can make use of the computers of the compute center of the faculty. Also they have ready access to the rich central library as well as the library of the department.
There are very important laboratories which are used by students and teachers to increase their knowledge. They are as follows:
-Construction materials lab.
-Concrete technology lab.
-Strength of materials lab.
-Soil mechanics lab.
-Road pavement lab.
-Hydraulic and fluid lab.
